JUST BEFORE THE SUNSHINE
MJ Suayan makes photographs and then lets them come apart. His prints are treated with chemicals, exposed to iron, dust, soil, rain, and sunlight, then left to weather. The corrosion, rust, and bleeding inks are not damage. They are the work. Scanned mid-decay, the resulting glitches become his language for how memory actually behaves: fragmenting, fading, distorting through grief and time.This survey brings together for the first time a significant collection of his manipulated photographic images and mixed media experiments, all made in the stillness before dawn.
ABOUT MJ SUAYAN
MJ Suayan is primarily a self-taught artist who has complemented his practice through workshops with renowned photographers Raymond Isaac, Manny Librodo, Emily Soto, and the Philippine Center for Creative Imaging. His photographic work has appeared in both local and international magazines and fashion publications, while selected images have been featured on PhotoVogue by Vogue Italia.In 2016, he mounted his first solo exhibition, “The Unknown Images”, marking a significant milestone in his artistic career.Working across photography and mixed-media art, MJ’s practice explores themes of memory, mortality, and personal transformation. While his earlier works were characterized by dark imagery shaped by experiences of personal tragedy, his more recent works have embraced a broader palette, reflecting an evolving emotional and conceptual perspective.Alongside his studio practice, he is an active photography educator, conducting workshops in the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
